NYU-ePoly Ranked #4 in OnlineSchoolsCenter.com List of 30 Most Tech Savvy Online Schools

This July, NYU-ePoly was ranked fourth place as the Top Most Technologically Savvy Online Schools by onlineschoolscenter.com. The goal at Online Schools Center is to help students look for the latest, most useful information geared towards business professionals who prefer online education. Information and data used in rankings included web statistics, previous school rankings and data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

NYU’s Online Engineering Master’s Ranked Top by U.S. News & World Report

For the second year in a row, NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering was placed on the U.S. News & World Report honor roll. Ranked No. 12 of the 2014 Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs, NYU-ePoly, the school’s online unit, is one of nearly 1,000 surveyed and analyzed. Only regionally accredited schools that meet federal standards for entirely online delivery are evaluated.

The online program gives professionals 24/7 access to an award-winning online platform, with virtual courses available in cybersecurity and, electrical, computer, industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering.

Last fall, NYU-ePoly launched its new online Organizational Behavior master’s degree program, powered by Live Virtual Learning (LVL), an HD video streaming system equipped with a two-way conference line to encourage interaction with remote learners. In a special arrangement this summer, NYU-ePoly will deliver its first-ever online Management of Technology master’s degree program exclusively to IBM employees worldwide.

Included are instructors from Goldman Sachs, General Motors and Jet Blue, among other Fortune 500 companies. They bring in-the-trenches knowledge not often found in academic settings. Some are so sought after that eager graduate students close out their classes within minutes.

NSA Names NYU School of Engineering to Exclusive List of Cyber Security Programs

First in New York to be Designated an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations

The National Security Agency and the United States Cyber Command have named the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations, the first in New York earning the designation and one of only a handful in the country to earn all three Center of Excellence designations from NSA.

The new honor signals that a school maintains a deeply technical, interdisciplinary graduate-level program with extensive opportunities for hands-on learning. Launched in 2012, the Center of Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations is the third such program overseen by the agency. The CAE in Information Assurance Education was launched in 2001, and the NYU School of Engineering became one of the first schools in the country to earn that designation. The CAE in Information Assurance Research was initiated in 2007, with the NYU School of Engineering earning that honor, as well, shortly thereafter. All three are designed to cultivate cyber professionals, and the program is an outgrowth of the President’s National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education.

“The NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering was one of the first schools in the nation to introduce a cyber security program,” said Professor Nasir Memon, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. “We are very proud to have earned the National Center of Excellence designation in all three available areas and will continue to provide the hands-on interdisciplinary education and research support so vital for our country’s next generation of cyber security experts.”

The school launched its master’s program in cyber security in 2009, just weeks after the Pentagon revealed it had spent $100 million over the prior six months to clean up damage from Internet attacks and other network problems. Since then, more than 100 NYU School of Engineering master’s degree recipients have gone on to careers as developers of security products, security application programmers, security analysts, penetration testers, vulnerability analysts, and security architects. The school also offers numerous cyber security courses and extra-curricular opportunities for undergraduates.

Its cyber security program was previously singled out by the Sloan Consortium as the outstanding graduate online program.

Stream of Fortune 500 Companies Join NYU Engineering to Offer Master’s to High-Tech Personnel

IBM, Booz Allen Hamilton, ManTech and BNY Mellon follow a string of other Fortune 500 companies this year who have partnered with NYU School of Engineering in efforts to heighten the skills of their technical and management employees. NYU-ePoly, the school’s online learning unit, now serves more than 1,500 graduate students in advanced studies in Cybersecurity, Management of Technology and other in-demand fields.

Corporate students must leap the same academic bar as others to qualify for admittance into the school’s rigorous master’s program. To ensure remote students receive the same curriculum as those on campus, the school created a virtual cyber laboratory, known as VITAL, where students perform virtual hands-on experiments to reinforce concepts delivered in online lectures. Online students participate in real-time and e-discussions, stimulated by chat, texting, forums and other methods.

Scientific American Online Professional Learning Partnership Launched

In an innovative joint venture, NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering’s partnership with Scientific American launched its first weeklong, non-credit, online professional course in March, “Cognition and the Aging Brain”. Students participated from the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. The second course, “Bioinformatics: How to Analyze the Human Genome,” was delivered from April 7th to the 11th, 2014.

Upcoming in the 2014 schedule are the following courses:

  • “Mysteries of the Universe,” taught by Don Lincoln , Ph.D., experimental particle physics researcher and scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, June 16-20
  • “Disaster Management”, taught by Yuko Nakanshi, Ph.D., principal of Nakanishi Research and Consulting and chair and longstanding member of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Critical Transportation Infrastructure Protection, July 21-25
  • “Cosmic Frontiers I”, taught by Pankaj Joshi, Ph.D., Senior Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, August 18-22
  • “Cosmic Frontiers II”, taught by Pankaj Joshi, Ph.D., Senior Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, September 22-26

These courses use active-learning techniques, and they incorporate multimedia, drag-and-drop quizzes, video, voiceover, peer-to-peer learning, and interactive tools—features now being introduced in the school’s online master’s courses.

Best Practice 2: Discussion Board Watch

On the go? Who has the time to keep checking discussion board forums? Consider using the Watch tool in NYU Classes (called a Subscribe tool in other learning management systems). Get instant notifications about discussion board forum activity.

 

Best Practice 3: Online Groups Tool

Peer-to-peer learning is always important, and even online courses can have group work. Does your learning management system have a Groups tool? Faculty, consider having students creating their own work space for their group. Students, group work is much more productive when you have access to all the LMS tools.
